Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 24th December 2011
Following good performances at the 2011 ISAF World Championships in Perth, with three medals - one Silver and two Bronze - the New Zealand Olympic Committee announced the first members of the 2012 New Zealand Olympic Team on Wednesday.
Our congratulations to those sailors selected.
In this edition of Sail-World we have details of the team, along with an interview conducted earlier this year with Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. Between the two of them they have four world championship titles and Burling remarkably is about to compete in his second Olympics while still only 20 years old.
There's some words of advice from the pair for young sailors, it is worth noting that they each came from quite different sailing backgrounds, save for a lot of common ground in secondary schools teams racing. The Volvo Ocean Race has entered the Stealth Zone - an area where boat positions will not be revealed to reduce the opportunities for international piracy involving the Volvo Ocean Race yachts. The same process will apply on the return trip.
The third finisher of the first leg, Groupama proved another maxim of round the world tactics for the Southern Ocean, 'if you don't know where to go, head south.' Franck Cammas, and his Round the World record holding crew, had two stabs at this tactic, and it paid second time around, to the point where Groupama held a handy lead as the fleet neared the initial finish point for the leg.
Sail-World tracking of the fleet using an alternate method of finish position prediction indicated that the Groupama would have some difficult options going through the Doldrums. For those astern the course options were less aggressive, and surprise, surprise, this morning we see there have been big lead changes in a very short space of time.

Still waters run deep on the America's Cup scene. On Thursday we participated in a media conference with America's Cup Regatta Director, Iain Murray who made a number of interesting observations on the America;'s Cup World Series but also other series on the professional circuit. Murray is in Australia to once again compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race aboard line honors favorite Wild Oats. She has been substantially revamped ahead of this year's race, and her performance will be watched with great interest. We will have a story on the interview in the next edition of Sail-World.com.
Also on Thursday we took delivery of a driPhone - the amazing case for an iPhone which allows full functionality even when underwater. Yep - you can watch Youtube underwater, if you want. The driPhone allows you to shoot movies and take photos in a very wet environment, plus you can use the chart plotting capability of the iPhone in the cockpit, if you wish. In this edition we explain some of the features of the driPhone including how you can buy online. Delivery is by first available courier, so even if it is a little late to go under the Xmas tree, you can still give one for Xmas - for delivery between Xmas and New Year. The driPhone is available for Androids and some other touch screen phones.

2011 has been a year of some highs and plenty of lows for New Zealand. As we head into the festive season, spare a thought for those who are no longer here and were taken at far too early an age, and there will be an empty place at too many Christmas celebrations in the coming days. Today also marks the 10th anniversary of the celebration of Sir Peter Blake's life in front of the Auckland Museum - another time of sombre reflection.
