Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 19 December 2011
The NZL Sailing Team has emerged from the 2011 ISAF World Championships in Perth, with three medals - one Silver and two Bronze - a creditable result, which compares with the two silver medals won at this event in 2007.
In this edition of Sail-World we have the daily coverage from the regatta, both from the Sail-World team and Yachting NZ sources.
New Zealand also qualified in nine of the ten events, with the Mens Keelboat (Star) not being represented in Perth.
In the Indian Ocean, the Volvo Ocean Race continues to change and baffle.
The latest report from organisers has the oldest boat in the fleet, Team Sanya (Mike Sanderson) almost 200nm ahead of Camper with the rest of the fleet reasonably closely bunched over a spread of 70nm.

We have expressed our reservations, in this edition, over the methods used to calculate the lead, given that the fleet is racing to a virtual destination. The same methods were used to give Groupama a massive lead in the first leg, yet they finished in a very safe third and final place. While prediction methods using weather routing give a different, and as it proved on the first leg, a more accurate result.
However the race is certainly at an interesting juncture as Team Sanya made an early break with the fleet and now faces a tropical storm, while the others are more to the east and in lighter winds.
We will update on this story on www.sail-world.com as it unfolds. Will there be more boat-breaking action? We shall see.

The Global Ocean Race are copping a pasting as they for the Leg 2 finish in Wellington. New Zealand entry Buckley Systems has blown out sails and report they are really unable to force the pace on the race leader. Further they are being forced north into an organiser imposed gate which is pushing them into a region of stronger winds. We have an extract from Ross and Campbell Field's blog in this edition - written from on board and deep in the Southern Ocean.
In slightly warmer climes, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron with the staged the National Youth Training Week at Kawau Island with ten clubs sending teams from throughout New Zealand, using boats from the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Program. 40 sailors from 10 clubs competed in the event which has given many young sailors from through New Zealand their first taste of sailing in a camp environment that is used by so many other sports on a developmental basis.

We have a report and some great photos from the National Youth Training Week, in this edition of Sail-World.
Finally we have managed to get our statistics updated for November and are pleased to report a record month with an estimated 540,000 visits to Sail-World, an increase of about 45,000 visits over the previous record from July 2011.
We must be doing something right!
