Races, long and short—Sailing news from the U.S. and beyond

The One Design world is alight with news from the 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championships, which is currently taking place in western Australia. While some classes have already concluded their medal races, competition is still red-hot in the Lasers, 49ers, Men's RS:X, Women's 470 and Star (which finishes today- with Mark Mendelblatt and Brian Fatih tracking towards a Silver medal.) All medal races will be concluded by the end of the day Sunday, so expect a lot of coverage in the next few days.

While US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics sailors have enjoyed a strong showing at this world-class event, much attention was focused yesterday on the Women's Match Racing event, where American Anna Tunnicliffe and her teammates took the Gold Medal. Sail-World talked to Anna yesterday.

Also Perth-related, check out Rob Kothe's piece on three-time Laser World Champion Tom Slingsby, who is aiming to rack up a staggering fourth Laser world title this Sunday. But first up for Slingsby and all other Laser competitors is Saturday's Laser Gold fleet race in the next few hours . 'It will be one more day of tricky Gold fleet sailing close to shore. I just need one good one on Saturday. I just have to keep myself clear and sail my own race. Up front would be preferable.'

Offshore, fickle weather conditions are proving to be fine opponents for the navigators racing in the Volvo Ocean Race. 'We've been attempting to push through a frontal system to our east, but every time we get close, the weather changes, the wind dies, and back we fall into stronger winds to the west,' reported Puma Ocean Racing Media Crew Member, Amory Ross. 'Then our boat speeds re-ignite, we reset our hopes and try again until the wind dies and the sluggish process repeats. All day long it's been like that, and it's downright infuriating.'

Meanwhile, Loïck Peyron and his Banque Populaire team are still sailing fast (and south) in their attempt to set a new Jules Verne Trophy record for the fastest elapsed time around the planet. 'Few if any sailing boats would ever come here,' reported crewmember Brian Thompson of the team's position. 'Round-the-world races now have mandatory ice gates, and so it's really only a Jules Verne attempt, that has no limits, that would come here.' To the north of Banque Populaire but also in the Southern Ocean, the six-strong fleet of Class 40s that are competing in the Global Ocean Race continue to get bashed and battered by a persistent low-pressure system that's blowing from the east. Currently, Cessna Citation and BSL lead the fleet, but these pacesetters are no doubt experiencing plenty of pressure from astern. Get the latest news, inside.

America's Cup: Chris Draper makes surprise exit from Team Korea Cliff Webb and Sail-World, Team Korea have announced that their skipper, Chris Draper (GBR) will leave the team. The reasons for Draper's exit are not revealed in the announcement by the team.
