Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 16 December 2011
In this edition we have the first pictures, taken this morning of Emirates Team NZ trialling two wingsails aboard their pair of SL-33's.
The move marks the start of a summer of activity for the team in Auckland, as they continue their testing and workup program, soon to be joined by another Kiwi favorite Luna Rossa – once they have taken delivery of their AC45.
The image gallery we have of the wingsails, show two rigs of the same height, although from our vantage point in the Viaduct Harbour, and in some of the shots, one looks taller than the other.

In the Volvo Ocean Race the fleet has split across a 200nm face. To be honest it is a little hard to comment on the race, as outside the crews no-one knows where they are headed, other than some ship in some port, somewhere.
Regardless of that small side-issue, the images and video coming back is exceptional, and while the bulk of this is being run in our weekly Volvo Ocean Race newsletters – we do have the latest story and position report in this edition.
In Fremantle the ISAF World Championships are winding to a close. We have the daily reports in this edition from Yachting NZ's Kristine Lederis in Fremantle.

The NZL Sailing Team look like they will achieve their objective of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in all classes, except the Star which is not competing. In all the classes racing this week, New Zealand is in the top ten overall – which is a good achievement particularly compared to others like Canada and USA.
It hasn't been a great regatta for the British team, superior for so many years, has had their top Star crew pull out with a back injury. A rib injury accounted for one of their top 49er crews, and their triple Gold medalist, Ben Ainslie is subject to an adverse RRS69 report. Australia is having a good regatta - but all teams will come away realising that the standard has gone up several notches and nothing is assured ahead of the 2012 Olympics in August 2012.

The Ben Ainslie saga rolls on. In this edition we have a new story which looks at the wider issues of media at major regattas such as these World Championships and the Olympics. We also cover the increasing trend towards 'Stadium Sailing' which to our eyes is like racing F1 cars on a speedway track. It might produce a few thrills and spills, and get the walkup crowd close to the action, but gets boring after a while as the nuances of boatspeed are eliminated just to achieve a 20 minute race.
