Perth 2011 report—Sailing news from the U.S. and beyond

The One Design action at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships is intense right now as some classes' Gold races build up, while others wind down. Racing was particularly tough in the Laser Radial class, where US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) rep Paige Railey brought home a Bronze Medal. 'It's good to win bronze here,' reported a happy Railey. 'It's a bigger win than any of the other Worlds, and I'm proud to represent the US and win a medal.' Look for a strong performance from Railey in next summer's Olympic Games.

Racing also concluded in the Finn class, where event leader Ben Ainslie (GBR) was disqualified from races nine and ten due to an incident with a media-boat driver, causing an upset on the leader board and ending his dreams of Gold in this important event. 'I'm very sorry that the jury decided to react the way they did over something which really wasn't as big as it was blown up to be,' said Ainslie. 'It's very disappointing that the Championship has been decided this way. I've worked extremely hard over the last six weeks and have been training incredibly hard to get to this position in a venue, which has been difficult for me with my size against the bigger sailors. I feel like I've actually sailed one of the best regattas of my life so to be in this situation now is very disappointing.' Giles Scott (GBR) took top Finn honors, followed by Pieter-Jan Postma (NED) and Ed Wright (GBR); USSTAG Finn rep Zach Railey (Paige's older brother) finished in eighth place.

Now the question arises, will the RYA, the British Yachting Authority impose a penalty on Ainslie? In past sailors have receive bans of up to two years for similar offences. Sail-World will keep you posted.

Five US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics athletes have now been selected for the US Olympic Team 2012.
Paige Railey Laser Radial and her brother Finn Zach Railey Finn class 470 Mens Stuart McNay and Graham Biehl 470 Mens have qualified. US Sailing's Olympic Sailing Committee will officially nominate the US Olympic Team 2012, pending approval from the US Olympic Committee.

Farrah Hall women's windsurfer (RS: X), has earned a nomination pending both US Olympic Committee approval and qualification of the USA in the RS:X. As the USA did not qualify at the ISAF Worlds, the final opportunity will be 2012 RS:X World Championship, in Cadiz, Spain

Leg 2 Race Tracker at 15:00 GMT 11/12/2011 - Global Ocean Race 2011-12

Offshore, the intensity is ratcheting up in the double-handed Global Ocean Race (GOR), where six teams are racing around the world aboard Class 40 raceboats—a class that's quickly becoming serious business on the shorthanded sailing circuit. Conrad Colman and Sam Goodchild aboard Cessna Citation were the first through the Celox Sailing Scoring Gate at 69 degrees East (north of Kerguelen Island in the Indian Ocean), followed by Halvard Mabire and Miranda Merron on Campagne de France and Ross and Campbell Field aboard BSL. 'Having seen over our shoulder that the Fields had clearly put up a gennaker to stay ahead of the front, we couldn't hang around,' reported Colman. 'Up again with the Code 5 and [our] world turned white! The spray we currently have on deck isn't one's garden-hose, let's-water-the-roses-type spray—we now have the whiteout-sheets-of-water-with-droplets-the size-of-bricks-type spray.' This weekend was also a big one in Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) circles, as the six-strong fleet ticked off the inshore racing in Cape Town, plus they also started Leg Two, which eventually takes the teams to Abu Dhabi, via an unconventional, pirate-avoidance scheme. Iker Martínez and his Telefonica crew built on their Leg One victory by nabbing top honors in the in-port race, followed by Emirates Team New Zealand and the Puma Ocean Racing. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing led the fleet out of Cape Town, but the fleet is expecting uphill conditions and rough weather for the first several days of this leg; hopefully the attrition rate will not be as big a factor in this next leg as it was in the first.
