Perth 2011 update-Sailing news from the U.S. and beyond

By far, the biggest news in sailing is coming from Australia, where the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships are currently taking place. Action is hot in all of the classes, especially now that the weather has settled down a bit from the fervent thunder and lightning storms of earlier in the week, and recovered from the weak breezes of last weekend. The first Gold Fleet races have now taken place, with fine performances by US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) members Anna Tunnicliffe (Women's Match Racing) and Paige Railey (Laser Radials). Speaking of Tunniclife and Railey, both sailors have made the prestigious US Sailing's 2011 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Award's official shortlist, along with five other women and eight men. Find out more about these talented sailors, as well as the annual award, inside.

In offshore news, check out the latest whispers about what classes stand the best shot at winning the overall prize for the upcoming 2011 Sydney-Hobart Race. While the supermaxi's will be toeing the line, rumor has it that the 50-footers are the boats to watch.

Also offshore, all six entrants in the 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race are safely in Cape Town after individual journeys involving a variety of transportation methods. Battling the clock, Puma Ocean Racing is trying to get their new mast stepped and tuned before this week's upcoming in-port race. Likewise, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing has been working hard to get their spar rigged, and Team Sanya have completed the (nearly) impossible task of rebuilding a huge section of their bow, which they badly broke in the first storm-tossed few days of Leg One. Leg Two of the Global Ocean Race is also proving to be entertaining, with Marco Nannini and Hugo Ramon, aboard Financial Crisis recently overtaking Halvard Mabire and Miranda Merron aboard Campagne de France. The fleet is at roughly 42 degrees South, so the conditions are starting to deteriorate, with some nasty weather in the forecast. 'We're a bit like an animal being led to the slaughterhouse,' said Ramon of the upcoming blow. 'Although we do have a choice of when we let the front give us a whipping.'
