The Chase Is On
 | | Crew of Maxi Banque Populaire V - Jules Verne Trophy 2011-12 BPCE |
One of the most interesting adventures in sailing is a Jules Verne Trophy (JVT) attempt. This offshore challenge is simple enough: Sail any vessel around the world as quickly as possible. Currently, skipper Loick Peyron and his crewmembers aboard the maxi trimaran Banque Populaire V are well on their way to establishing a new round-the-world standard, after setting several important 'virtual records' (e.g., the fastest times from the starting line, off of Ushant, France, to certain points en route, for example the Cape of Good Hope) along the way. Banque Populaire V is now well into the Indian Ocean, a full day ahead of skipper Franck Cammas' standing JVT time.
'A few decades ago, twelve days was the time set by Charlie Barr to cross the Atlantic, a record he held for a long time,' said Peyron. 'Today, it is almost the time it took us to get to the Southern Africa. However, we should not forget that we are sailing on an extraordinary machine. Banque Populaire is an amazing tool that uses the intelligence of men and the work of a team. What we have just achieved would not have been possible three years ago.' | | Womens Match Racing Day 2 - ISAF Sailing World Championships Perth 2011 Paul Kane |
Meanwhile, the One Design action at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, being held in Western Australia, has been as fierce as expected. 'Yesterday was the first day of racing at the Perth 2011 ISAF World Sailing Championships,' reports US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) Women's Match Racing hopeful Anna Tunnicliffe. 'We had a great start with three wins in our three races. The river is really tricky to sail in and we're happy to get three wins in those conditions. All day the wind was coming over the sheds and dropping down. It was hard to see what was coming at us, and we were playing the shifts on a very short course.' Be sure to check out this issue for the latest reports from USSTAG sailors, as well as some great image galleries from Perth.
In Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) circles, Team Sanya's shore crew has built and installed a new bow section for their crippled VO70, restoring her to full-on racing capacity. Likewise, Puma Ocean Racing's shore crew preformed miracles and retrieved their dismasted Mar Mostro from the remote South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha. Be sure to allocate some free time to check out the great hour-long video recap from Leg One of the VOR, inside.

Also unfurling this week is the Melges 32 Gold Cup Regatta, the Carlos Aguilar Match Race, and the ongoing second leg of the Global Ocean Race, as well as the Phuket King's Cup. Be sure to track these events, and stay tuned for the latest from the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, as it takes place.
May the four winds blow you safely home,
