Perth 2011 and the Road to London (well Freo to Weymouth actually)
The 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships start today in Perth, Western Australia.
More than 1100 sailors from 79 nations will be fighting for their World Championships and a chance to qualify their countries for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The first weekend of racing will showcase the Women's Match Racing competition inside Fremantle Harbour, before the 470 Men, Finn, Laser Radial and RS:X Women get into the action on Monday. Fleets will rotate through inshore and outside courses. Medal rounds will be held for those classes on Sunday December 11. The Star class will commence racing on Sunday.
During the event's second week the 470 Women, 49ers, Lasers and the RS:X Men will hit the water. The Womens Match Racing finals are on Friday December 16, the Stars will sail their medal race on Saturday, with the balance of fleets completing their regatta on Sunday.
Two weeks of stadium sailing (and some in the distance) - excitement, drama, dreams shattered and dreams begun.
Just 380 sailors (237 men, and143 women) will become London Olympians.
We wish the sailors, their supporters and the event organisers the very best of everything and especially wind.
Go the Fremantle Doctor!!!
