US Sailor of the Year prepares for Perth 2011 -News from the U.S. and

We lead with Shauna McGee Kinney's profile piece on US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics' member Anna Tunnicliffe and her Team Maclaren, as they prepare for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships (December 3-16, 2011). Tunnicliffe, has won the Rolex ISAF Woman Sailor of the Year Award in 2009 and 2011, and earned a Gold in 2008 Olympics in the Laser Radial event. Since the 2008 quad, Tunnicliffe has turned her attention to the Women's Match Racing event, where she has enjoyed meteoric success, but this is a key part of the Olympic selection process.

British match-racing great Ian Williams became a triple ISAF Match Racing World Champion this weekend by winning the prestigious Monsoon Cup. This year's event started with a lot of breeze and rain, before relinquishing to more moderate conditions. 'The Monsoon Cup always throws a lot at you,' reported Williams. 'We actually had it all thrown at us very early on here, when were 0-3. We were up against it. The round robin was really when things got a little bit heated and we very nearly went out - we just scraped through.' Get the full Sail-World debriefing from Williams, inside.

Offshore, Telefonica drew the serious blood in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), winning the first offshore leg that took crews from the race's start in Alicante, Spain, to Cape Town, South Africa. The Spanish-flagged team sailed a hefty 6,500 miles in 21 days, 5 hours, 14 minutes and 25 seconds. 'The feeling is fantastic,' said Telefonica skipper Iker Martínez. 'It's something that you only dream of. We've seen what can happen and we have achieved much more than we thought we could.' It will be interesting to see if the first boat to Cape Town wins the VOR's overall prize again this year...

Emirates Team New Zealand arrived in Cape Town in second place, leaving third-place honors to Groupama as the other three entrants—Puma Ocean Racing, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Team Sanya—were all forced to abandon racing after suffering severe damage. Get the full VOR multimedia update, inside.
