Some while back, when old fellers like me were still messing about in dinghies, we were all shocked when boats started to fall apart in races like the Fastnet and the Hobart. Backstays pulling out of transoms. Accusations of boats built with inadequate scantlings. Duff design, stretching the envelope a tad too far, and so on. I guess that there are a few people out in the South Atlantic right now who are listening to every creak, groan, and carbon-fibre crackle with extra-anxious attention.
Puma's mast has come down, and they are limping to Capetown under jury rig. So three out of six of the starters are down and out. 'Decimated' is a strong and scary word, but it only means one-in-ten. We need a much scarier word for mishaps that have cut the Volvo Ocean Race in half.
(But you know what? This stuff makes great headlines. As long as everyone gets home in one piece, Volvo will be just lapping up the additional exposure. It makes the crews look like Christians waiting to be thrown to the lions).
Closer to home, the 2011 edition of the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta is making its way up the coast of Malaysia, and has already produced its share of upsets, when Hi Fi took line honours for the first race but ended up at the bottom of the division. Read all about it, below.
