Sail-World New Zealand: 12 November 2011
 | | Optimists will hold a fundraiser this Wednesday Tim Whittaker | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 12 November 2011
We're sorry and disappointed to have to report that again the coverage of the America's Cup World Series will be blocked again for New Zealand fans on Youtube, and that the only viewing kiwi fans will be able to see will be on a link in some part of TVNZ's website.
Although we have not been told officially Sail-World understands that in other countries where broadcasting rights are being signed, there is no block on delayed Youtube coverage at all. It would appear that New Zealand fans are being singled out.
While the situation may be acceptable if you are in a situation where you work in an office where you are are allowed to watch America's Cup on the internet during the day, for most this is not an option.

And as we saw in Plymouth, when the series are staged in UK and Europe the timezones in those countries mean that the livestream coverage is available only in the middle of the night, and other than that Kiwis can whistle for it.
It is often claimed that the America's Cup media deals are of huge benefit to the sport and a model that should be copied by other regattas. Sorry, with this sort of nonsense being practised it is very hard to see how this progresses the sport, and in our view it is a significant setback. The ACWS may as well be taking place on the dark side of the moon as far as Kiwi fans are concerned.
 | | Volvo Ocean Race peaks way higher than the America's Cup World Series, according to the latest Alexa ratings | Fortunately the Volvo Ocean Race marches to a different drum and have wound up their coverage of the event to new levels - and with very slick television production by organisers and teams that actually tells a story for fans.
It is no surprise to see that the Alexa ratings for the Volvo Ocean Race are outstripping the America's Cup website after less than a week. The graph of the Daily Traffic Trend shows that VolvoOceanRace.com was as popular as AmericasCup.com even before the Volvo had started and spiked in the first weekend of the start. Yes, there was some drama which always helps internet ratings, but the America's Cup World Series, also had a good tune in from fans, when the first event was staged in Cascais, and surprisingly less so, when all the carnage occurred in Plymouth, evidenced by their second peak.
It will be interesting to follow the ratings this weekend, and the coming week, as the America's Cup World Series starts in San Diego and goes head to head with the Volvo Ocean Race fleet as they arm-wrestle in the Atlantic, heading for the first leg gate in Brazil.

The International Sailing Federation Annual Conference is currently underway in Puerto Rico. we have details of some of the key announcements and decisions in this edition and will have a full wrap once the meeting concludes, and the various committee recommendations have been accepted or denied by the ISAF Council.
One remit that has been denied is the move to abandon trials for the Womens High Performance skiff in favour of just selecting the 29erXX. These trials will now proceed in April as originally planned.
