Sail-World New Zealand: 8 November 2011
 | | Camper sailed by Emirates Team NZ at the start of the Volvo Ocean Race Chris Cameron/ETNZ | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 8 November 2011
We're getting back into the groove after the dramatic start to the Volvo Ocean Race, which caught everyone unawares.
Most of our coverage of the Volvo Ocean Race will be contained in the now weekly newsletter which is going to 115,000 subscribers around the world - making it easily the largest sailing newsletter ever sent.
For those who wish to follow every nuance of the Volvo Ocean Race we are running a microsite which can be accessed from the top heading bar on www.sail-world.com
We will be carrying some Volvo OR news on the main Sail-World site but as the race settles down this content will reduce.
 | | Winners Stratos Simon Holdt and Colin Frankham - Hartley 16 North Island champs Dean Stanley |
For sure it has been a very well followed event by sailing fans, and there seems to be huge interest - crash and burn aside.
On the America's Cup front we have a new entry - Luna Rossa - as predicted for some time. However what was surprising was the deal and the ramifications of it for Emirates Team New Zealand.
 | | Salperton IV under sail with her new rig from Southern Spars Southern Spars |
In this edition we have published an analysis of what it means for both teams - who can potentially make a significant gain over their rivals. Whether the benefits are realised is largely in Italian hands, as it is they who have to get up to speed, having been given the rare opportunity to buy the scarce commodity of time.
 | | 49er Men - Peter Burling and Blair Tuke - 2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup - Sail Melbourne Teri Dodds |
We're pleased to be able to run a report from the North Island Hartley 16 Championships staged at Te Awamutu with 14 entries. What was most significant about the event was that in these times of gloom and doom and talk of sailing going backwards, this was the first time the regatta has been staged in 13 years - and shows what can be done with a few people 'talking up the market'. Even better, Wayne Holdt reports that many of the sailors were in their 20's and taking on the so-called Flinstone generation.
