The Sail-World VOR newsletter is one of a series of newsletters which will be sent over the coming 12 months, covering the Volvo Ocean Race, the 2011 ISAF World Sailing Championships, and the 2012 Olympic Regatta. We're not quite sure of the total newsletter count that will be sent but expect it to be now over 6.5million across the three publications. In this edition, sent to 115,000 subscribers, we cover the Volvo Legends Regatta and Reunion in Alicante, staged ahead of the start of the Volvo Ocean Race. As well we feature some material from the Sail-World Archives. Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta: Steinlager 2.   Ian Roman/Volvo Ocean Race One of these is Ceramco's dismasting on the first leg of the then Whitbread Round the World, which was one of the defining moments in New Zealand's yachting history, as she sailed over 3,000nm under Jury rig to finish the leg and continue in the race. The incident came to characterise the character of the Round the World races. These stories from the Sail-World archives capture the moment of the dismasting with photos from on board, and audio kindly provided by Peter Montgomery from the time the mast came down to the arrival in Cape Town and the infamous Garden Party. We also have a couple of stories on why people do these races. One remembers those who started the race, and died. While boats can't talk, we hope the character of both shine through in the interviews and video we feature in this newsletter. These go right back to the first race winner, Ramon Carlin (Mexico), who was back in Alicante at the age of 85 years old to meet his old crew. Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta: L'Esprit d'Equipe.   Paul Todd/Volvo Ocean Race At 2.00pm UTC the 2011/12 edition of the Volvo Ocean race will get underway from Alicante, Spain. In a break with the theme of this Legends newsletter, we have a story which contains the viewer which will allow you to follow the start live, via the interweb. The forecast is for a rough trip on the initial stages, and it looks like the fleet will have a dust-up before turning left and heading for Cape Town. The whole top half of the mast was over the side but still attached by internal halyards and wiring systems, plus the mainsail and jib and the headstay.
