 Challenging conditions in the Clipper Round the World!
The 2011 Viper 640 North American Championships were held in Sarnia, ON from September 28th to October 1st. 21 entries, from as far as the UK, participated in this final event in the EFG Pan American Series; sailing in their home waters, Team Jackpot, Brad Boston, Lee Shuckerow and Erik Vigrass from Point Edwards, ON were declared winners when the last day of racing had to be canceled because of extreme conditions on Lake Huron. The University of Ottawa Racing Team attended the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta at the Larchmont Yacht Club, NY last week-end. The event attracted 47 teams who raced in borrowed yachts with the full support of the yacht owners, but no driving allowed; helming and tactics had to be performed solely by the college students.
Gold Coast Australia is maintaining a comfortable lead at the front of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fleet, followed by New York. The entire fleet has been exposed to rather unpleasant conditions over the past few days as they sailed through a massive low pressure system; the winds have now subsided but it is still cold under gray skied in the Southern Oceans as they set their course on the scoring gate. Visit Finland and Derry Londonderry will certainly welcome these calmer conditions as they need to consider how to repair damage sustained to their mainsail in the harrowing conditions earlier this week; both teams have punctured large holes in their mainsail; most other yachts are also dealing with minor damage from the conditions.
Team Telefonica just unveiled their crew for the upcoming 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race. Under the leadership of Spanish skipper Iker Martinez, second place finisher on Mapfre in the recent Barcelona World Race, the crew includes Xabi Fernandez, also from Mapfre and other notable Olympic medalists, America's Cup winners and a VOR winner. Team Telefonica will race a new Juan K design yacht built in Spain.
The passage through the Doldrums has a significant impact on the current order of the leader board in the Global Ocean Race; some became victims and fell behind, while others were able to escape easily and make appreciable gains. Some had to console themselves by jumping over the side and going for a swim... We have photos of the swimmers!
Stay tuned for our regular reports from the La Charente-Maritime/Bahia Transat 6.5; the fleet left Madeira yesterday on the second leg of the race to Brazil.
