The Match Racing scene continues to have more than its fair share of West Australians.

Torvar Mirsky won the Bermuda Gold Cup, Peter Gilmour is current fourth on the World Tour, while Gilmour Jnr (David) and Peter Nicholas are battling the Kiwis amongst others in Terengganu this week, to join in the fun there at the Monsoon Cup. Last year there was 250mm (10 inches) of rain during that event but once again the Sail-World team enjoyed it hugely. We will be back there from Nov 22-27th.

The Sail-World team was in Mackinac in northern Michigan, for the end of the 2011 Chicago Mackinac Race, when a giant storm blasted the approaching fleet. Two sailors from the 35 footer WingNuts were killed. We've made some commentary and provided some extracts from the Charlevoix Country Sheriffs Report (below) and we and the sailing community await US Sailings independent report commissioned by the Chicago Yacht Club.

One of the issues is tethers and how they can be released under load. This has been a problem for skiffs and cats for many years, with some drowning caused by tangled harnesses etc. One sailor has suggested that some kind of heavy duty Velcro systems might be worth investigating – they certainly seem to work for surfboard leg straps.
