VOR: Game On—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond
 | | Watch Leader Neal McDonald from the UK and Helmsman/Trimmer Jordi Calafat from Spain, for Team Telefonica - Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 Maria Muina |
For fans of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), these are exciting times. The first fisticuffs have been exchanged, with familiar names populating the podium positions in this past weekend's 360-mile official qualifying race. The race began in Alicante and carried the fleet out to Palma de Mallorca and back. Telefonica, skippered by Olympic gold medallist Iker Martínez, took line honors but was quick to downplay its importance, as no points were assigned, and teams had to run through a series of mandated emergency procedures, such as installing and steering under and emergency tiller. 'It was not a real race,' said Martínez. 'We spent a lot of time doing those maneuvers for the safety procedures, and we could have won or lost on any one of those.'
All teams have finished, but Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing ruffled feathers when skipper Ian Walker officially 'withdrew' by starting his engine, after his crew had preformed all drills and procedures during a becalming. It's currently unclear if what—if any—actions will be taken against Walker and company.

'We learned some valuable lessons about ourselves and the other teams,' said Ken Read, skipper of Puma Ocean Racing. 'We've always known that all the boats are going to be really fast and this race confirmed that. There are no dogs out there.' Puma's Mar Mostro finished second, followed by Team Sanya, skippered under the watchful eye of Cameron Dunn (Team Sanya skipper Mike Sanderson is recovering from last-minute surgery, but will be aboard for the race's start). Interestingly, Team Sanya is using a 2008/2009-generation Volvo Open 70, the only team to be doing so in this year's race. 'We have proved that if we sail smart and don't make mistakes then we can beat some of the newer boats,' said Dunn. Be sure to get the full report, plus plenty of great images, inside.
The Charlevoix Country Sheriff report, on the two deaths in the 2011 Chicago Mackinac Race has been published. As you will see from our Sail-World report on that report , it raises questions rather than answers them. More will come from the U.S.Sailing report set to be released On october 29th

Meanwhile, at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, won the TP52 Worlds, beating out serious completion in the world's première 50-foot class to win their third World title in four years of campaigning. 'It is a great way to finish the season,' said tactician Adrian Stead. 'We had a tense Audi MedCup, we have been really pleased with the way that we have sailed here against boats which have been in their conditions in the form of Gladiator and Paramount Park. Everyone has been pushing pretty hard.' Quantum was joined on the podium by Container and Gladiator. Details inside.
Stateside, Don Wilson won the prestigious 72nd Richardson Trophy, and the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta—organized by the Storm Trysail Foundation and the Larchmont Yacht Club—took place, with 318 college sailors racing in borrowed boats ranging from 31 to 36 feet on Long Island Sound. Action continues to mount at the Argo Group Gold Cup in Bermuda, Brad Boston and Lee Shuckerow took top honors at the Viper 640 North Americans, and David M. Hyer and Amy Kleinschrodt have won, respectively, the U.S. Men's and Women's Sailing Championships. Get the full scoops, inside.
May the four winds blow you safely home,
