 Plenty on the menu while we look forward to the Volvo Ocean Race!
Toronto was host to the 2011 Albacore International Championships in late September where 54 entries from Canada, the USA and the UK competed in the event. Check out the full report from Canadian Albacore Associate executive member Ken Yamazaki
The Volvo Ocean Race teams finally met on the water for the qualifying race earlier this week; even though this simply a requirement for the teams to demonstrate safety procedures and their ability to deal with offshore emergencies, it was the first real opportunity for the yachts to race against each other. Although some skippers stated they won't worry too much about the results, I am sure everyone wants to win. The next time they meet will be the Allicante In-Port race on October 29th.
Sardinia's Porto Cervo is host to the Audi TP 52 World Championships this week; Quantum Racing (USA) is at the top of the leader board but only lead by a single point. Racing was eventually canceled today with the Mediterranean Mistral piped up to 40 knots! Racing resumes tomorrow.
Gold Coast Australia is back in the lead on day 2 following the fleet departure from Cape Town. It should be interesting to find out if their current strategy of taking a more direct westerly route pays off against those who have opted to dip South early on.
In the Global Ocean Race, half the fleet can now select a more southerly route after getting past the Cape Verde Islands. Champagne de France is still in the lead but will soon have to contend with the Doldrums as they get nearer the equator on their way to the South Atlantic scoring gate set a few hundred miles off the Brazilian coast.
Sebastian Rogues (716) was victorious in the first stage of the La Charente-Maritime/Bahia Transat 6.5. He was soon followed in Funchal, Madeira by David Raison on the blunt nose TeamWork Evolution who came in less than a half-hour behind Rogues. The fleet is getting ready for the start of Leg 2 from Madeira to Bahia, Brazil on October 13th.
