The New Zealand crew of Ross and Campbell Field sailing Buckley Systems have set the initial pace in the Global Ocean Race, leading after the first day.
However that was shortlived, and they are locked in a battle for the race lead with Cessna Citation sailed by fellow Kiwi Conrad Colman (27) and Hugo Ramon (ESP). Ironically at 26years old Ramon is the reverse of Ross Field's age!
This is surely set to be a battle of youth against experience, and it will be fascinating to see how the race unfolds.

In this edition we start our coverage of the four stop Round the World Race, utilising the race tracker provided on Global Ocean Race's website, as well as inputting some data from that system into Predictwind and doing some forward looking prognosis of what is ahead of the racers.
As well we are picking up stories from the race boats individual blogs - and between the analysis and onboard commentary we can get a fair idea of what is going on and about to happen.
The coverage we are running for the Global Ocean Race is a forerunner for what we expect to be able to produce for the Volvo Ocean Race which gets underway in just over a month's time.

In this edition of Sail-World's newsletter we announce our plans for the coverage of the Volvo Ocean Race and a once a week newsletter for the duration of the race. The last race produced some great material in terms of reports, video and images plus audio too, we hope.
The Volvo Ocean Race will have teams representing each of the major regions of the world, and on paper all look to be well managed, well prepared and of a high standard. The 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race will be an amazing trans-oceanic sailing competition. Already the boats have proved themselves to be at the top of the class in the Rolex Fastnet Race, and this will be ocean racing at its best.

The great news of the week is that the crew of the Golden Eagle have turned up alive and well in Ireland, after having been posted as missing on a trans-Atlantic sail and having a major search mounted - which had been scaled down, just before the arrived in Portmagee, Co Kerry. The interview extract from stuff.co.nz is just hilarious - and hats off to her crew particularly the New Zealander Frank Cooper.
On the America's Cup news front we are running a few back editions of the America's Cup Uncovered series - which take us behind the scenes on the America's cup World series. If you are interested in the America's Cup graphics - then there are a couple of segments in these videos which will be of interest. The ACEA imposed blocks have now expired and all video from the ACWS in Plymouth can now be seen by New Zealand viewers - although it is stale bread now.

We are running a story on the aftermath of the final day of racing in the World Series in Plymouth - an International Jury has required one of the teams to pay E150,000 in damages after a pre-start collision. We have the leaked decision in this edition of Sail-World. Quite why it hasn't been published in the Documents/Jury section of the America's Cup website is beyond us. But given the antics of the last week or so in the America's Cup and ACEA in particular - there's obviously quite a lot we don't understand.
