Awards, adventures, discoveries - the vibrant sailing scene
 | | Pacific Voyage Some of the Vaka on their way, photo by Magnus Danbolt .. . | What a vibrant sphere is the world of sailing - with adventurers, inventions, innovations, discoveries, tales of idyllic cruising and amazing heroism all competing for attention, both here and overseas.
Australians are out there doing their thing in the sailing scene. A couple of Australians are midway through their transit of the once-dreaded North West Passage and another rally is happening as I write in South East Asia with more than a few Aussie participants. Then there's Oceans Watch, now boasting to be an international organisation but having their genesis in the antipodes. Read their sailing tales of how they are helping Pacific Islanders to live sustainably and protect their heritage.
It's always a pleasure to know about Australian companies being ahead of the game. Read about how many awards the SOS Danbuoy has won, this week yet another - not only that, it's bound to excel internationally as it is the only flotation device in the world that has been tested to international lifejacket standard, ISO 12402.
Out in the Pacific there are some more sailors taking up the challenge of a grand adventure. Read about the 16 Polynesian sailors who are in the middle of a double crossing of the Pacific in their traditional sailing canoes, vakas.
On the practical side we suggest some great techniques for sailing when there's no visibility, and there's an App for your iPhone which will allow you to tell the tide as easily as tell the time.
Many more stories too, so, as usual, you need to browse through the headlines to find your own interest.
Sweet sailing!
