 Auckland show & superyacht forum, Jessica launch, drowning rate risesSummer IS here! I saw it today. On the Gold Coast, under picture-perfect azure skies, Jessica Watson and her youthful crew launched 'Another Challenge', with fanfare fit for a Princess. And her boat certainly is the stuff of legend, both in its pedigree and its pretty pink hues. But to hear Jessica and some of the under-21 crew she will skipper in the 2011 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, they are steely, seasoned and certainly under no illusions of what the sea will throw at them December 26.
'Black Joe' Akacich, himself a veteran of several Sydney to Hobarts, has believe in Jessica from the start, or at least from the day she limped in to Gold Coast City Marina after an aborted start to her round the world, solo and unassisted attempt in 2009.
'I could tell right away that she knew her stuff. She is a talented sailor and she is serious,' said Black Joe. That is high praise from this industry stalwart and fellow sailor. She may be tiny and just 18, but Jessica Watson has a dedication and determination beyond her years.
This week, along with celebrating fine boating weather, we present a varied batch of news, features and new products to hit the market. There is a lot about Auckland International Boat Show, with industry insight and accounts from our Sail-World NZ editor, Richard Gladwell, as well as detailed analysis and comment from the inaugural Superyacht Captains' Forum - hailed a success by industry and attendees.
This week, startling statistics from Surf Life Saving Australia which show drowning while boating and fishing have risen since 2007, mostly attributed to 'a mixture of bravado and high-risk taking activity'. Wearing PFDs, not drinking while operating a boat, and heeding the rules out on the water are vital for safe boating.
Soon to be finalised, the results of the boat show survey conducted at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and online since then. We will announce the winner and share the main results of the survey very shortly. Watch this space!
