La Solitaire du Figaro race had taken a back seat in the news over the past few weeks but Jérémie Beyou has just crossed the finish line ahead of the fleet to win the fourth and final leg from Les Sables d'Olonne to Dieppe. His third consecutive win and total domination in the 2011 event secured him the overall winner title. On his 12th participation in the prestigious race, Jérémie winds for the second time following his 2005 victory.
It's been slow going for the the Clipper Round the World fleet but the leaders have finally crossed the equator and are now sailing in the southern hemisphere; Gold Coast Australi, Singapore and Welcome to Yorkshire form a tight pack at the front of the fleet while others are still struggling with the Doldrums light air. Crews are looking forward the Easterly trade winds and an opportunity to hoist spinnakers and get the boat speed up again. The fleet is anticipated in Rio de Janeiro in early September.
After some false starts for the Audi MedCup event in Cartagena, Spain, the 52 Series teams are finally racing for the Region of Murcia Trophy today; the practice race earlier this week was canceled because, in an unusual fashion for Cartagena, there was no breeze on the course and they only managed a single race yesterday. The forecast calls for better racing conditions today and as usual, the live action and replays are available on Sail-World.com.
Earlier this week, Francis Joyon was waiting patiently in New York City for the perfect weather window in which he could start his solo attempt to break the Atlantic west to east crossing record on board the maxi trimaran IDEC. Unfortunately, shortly after his departure on Monday, while sailing under reduced sails given the challenging conditions, IDEC was flipped on its side by a violent gust; Joyon was only 20 miles offshore at the time and immediately called in for help. The yacht has been towed to Long Island and the record attempt will have to wait.
The Kingston, ON, CORK regatta has concluded yesterday after five days of racing that saw a variety of conditions that kept the racers ashore for some races but definitely tested their skill and ability most other times. Winners in all divisions are identified in Erim Murray's reports from the event. Today marks the beginning of the CORK Offshore and One-Design Regatta with the Long Distance Race on schedule, while course racing is back on for the week-end; Albacore and Flying Dutchman make up the majority of one design entries. www.cork.org
The Detroit Cup 2011, an ISAF Grade 2 match racing event, was hosted by the Bayview Yacht Club last week. Nineteen-year-old Australian, Jordan Reese and his team of Henry Kernot and Harry Thurston have won the title following an exciting five match finals on Sunday.
This week-end marks the start of the US Sailing's Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship at the Rochester Yacht Club in Rochester, NY where 36 teams of women sailors, including world champions, past Olympic competitors and every day sailors will race in four-person teams for four days of one-design fleet racing in International J/22 class keelboats. Teams representing three countries (USA, Canada and the Netherlands) will compete for the victory. Canada is well represented with five teams and crew members hailing from Ontario, Quebec and BC, including regular Sail-World Canada contributor, Katie Nicoll from PCYC.
