Battered solo sailor breaks Around Australia record
 | | Solo Sail Around Australia new record holder, Bruce Arms Suzanne Arms | Top praise for bruised and battered Bruce Arms as he clipped a full three day chunk off the Around-Australia solo sailing record in his 46ft catamaran, Big Wave Rider this week. Not an easy trip, as you'll know once you've read the story...
Among all the rallies that are offering these days, none will beat the timing and destination of Sail Noumea, our featured rally this week. It sets off next June from Brisbane at about the same time as a race by the same name. The New Zealanders are participating too with their own departure. What a gathering that will be on the other side of the water, - and then you could return from Vanuatu in November with the Port2Port!
 | | Huricane Irene 2011 - projection August 24-29 .. . | A large swathe of the USA's east coast is not the place to be this weekend for sailors, as Hurricane Irene barrels past the Bahamas and heads for the mainland. So spare a thought for your American sailing friends when you are out there in the (forecast) sunshine.
Boat Insurance: Oddly coinciding with the arrival of a hurricane on their shores, BoatUS has five hard questions for you to ask your marine insurance agent this week, and they are just as relevant for Australians. If your insurance policy is not due for renewal, print them out and keep them handy. If they can answer all these questions positively, you'll know you have a good company.
Pirates punished: One can only hope that the life sentence meted out to two pirates who were on board when four American cruising sailors were shot to death in February this year will begin to make Somalis think twice before being lured into the lucrative world of piracy on the high seas. Remember that the nine other cruising sailors are still in captivity in Somalia, waiting for ransoms which may never come, including three Danish teenagers. It's not for nothing that even the fast-paced racing yachts of the Volvo Ocean Race have decided not to sail the danger zone of the Indian Ocean, opting for some secretive transport methods and routes.
Lots of other articles too. That amazing solar vessel Turanor PlanetSolar has reached Hong Kong in its round-world odyssey, and Sail-World's Guy Nowell gets an up-close-and-personal experience on its vast decks; Laura Dekker, the long-range cruising 15-year-old, has acquired a manager, and he's making waves about the lack of support from New Zealand, her 'home' country; see the seven step reminder about how to get the best outcome when selling your boat; and there's a coy story about the poor Russian billionaire whose yacht has been rejected by the port of Antibes because someone richer has his 'spot'!
Browse down the headlines to see what catches your interest, and...
Sweet sailing.

New $680,000 rescue vessel for North Coast Marine Rescue volunteers Ken McManus, The newest addition to the Marine Rescue NSW fleet, a $680,000 offshore rescue vessel, is due to arrive at its home port, Iluka/Yamba tomorrow afternoon (Friday).
