Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 21 August 2011
New Zealand has another World Champion, this time in the form of Taylor Burn, who has won the 2012 Splash Worlds at Lake Lipno, Czech Republic - and done so with a convincing margin.
In this edition we have the report from the the final day of the Worlds from Rob Burn, who has been with the team from San Francisco at the Laser 4.7 Worlds through to the Splash Nationals and then the Worlds.
We've been a bit remiss in not running Rob's excellent reports from the Czech Nationals and 2012 Worlds, but have caught up in this edition, with three stories covering the Nationals, Worlds and Final Day of the Worlds. All with some great images. Rob calls them his postcards, and indeed they are.

There's a very interesting story in the aftermath of the Rambler capsize - involving some vital pre-race training the the whole crew went through. Clearly this training made the difference, and saved the lives of several of the crew. Make sure you read and have a think about your safety training and Plan A and Plan B's etc. We're picking that there will be quite a lot to come out of this incident, both in terms of what worked and what could have been better. However the bottom line, is that if a crew of top professionals on a top, well funded boat could go this close to disaster - what about us further down the food chain?
Full marks to owner George David for his proactive stance on safety for this race, and not just doing the minimum required for compliance with the race rules. His actions certainly saved his partner's life, and probably his own and three other crew members plus a couple of others trapped in the boat.

In Chicago a young New Zealand crew led by Matthew Stevens leads the Detroit Cup an ISAF Grade 2 event, from a second New Zealand crew, led by Laurie Jury - a very familiar name on the international match racing scene. This is a great result for the Wellington match racing program and the result of a lot of hard work by clubs and people behind the scenes. We have reports from the first days of the event in this edition of Sail-World and will be updating on www.sail-world.com
