Team 7 Match Racing Advances to Quarter Finals—Sailing News from the U
Sally Barkow and her Team 7 Match Race out-sailed the previously undefeated Russian team, skippered by Ekaterina Skudina, to advance to the Quarter Finals of the Women's Match Racing event at the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta. This event, it should be noted, is serving as the official test of Weymouth's sailing facilities, prior to the 2012 Olympic Games. 'It's been sunny and warm and for the most part pretty light,' said Barkow. 'I woke up to 20 knots of breeze. I'm a fan of big breeze as it favors my size a bit and I'm looking for another solid event and I'm looking forward to it.'
The super quick Team 7 Match Race consists of Barkow, Alana O'Reilly and Elizabeth Kratzig Burnham. The quarterfinals will be sailed this Saturday, and are being raced as a knockout round. Team 7 Match Race will dial-up against Mandy Mulder (NED) and crew. Stay tuned for more from the Women's Match Racing event, as it becomes known.
Also at the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, yesterday marked the start of racing in the RS:X class, while today will see the first guns fired in the Laser, Radial, and Men's and Women's 470 events. The Finn, the Star and the 49er classes will join the Women's Match Racing event on Saturday. Check out the regatta reports and multimedia coverage, including video Q&As with USSTAG members Zach Railey (Finns) and Brian Faith (Stars), inside.
 | | 04/08/2011 - Cascais (POR) - Americas's Cup World Series - ORACLE Racing - Puma Annoucement - Sailing Team - 34th America's Cup Guilain Grenier/Oracle Racing |
Interesting Cup news: Puma has now joined forces with Oracle Racing to produce a set of sailing-specific kit that's custom-designed to meet the needs of multihull Cup sailors. 'There was only one company for us. It was Puma. It's a hot brand with seriously cool gear,' said the now cat-clad Oracle Racing Skipper James Spithill.
Puma seems equally psyched on the arrangement: 'Oracle Racing is not only defending the Cup, but they are taking sailing to the next level – the boats are fast, the crews are dynamic and the racing is exciting to watch,' said Antonio Bertone, Chief Marketing Officer for Puma. 'This is the next step in developing the performance aspects of the sailing gear, along with connecting to a larger audience to spread the passion and joy of the sport.' Not only will this partnership likely produce some fashion-forward sailing threads, but it begs the question as to what Puma's intentions are—sailing wise—once the next Volvo winds down.
