 The race is on for the Clipper Round the World fleet!
La Solitaire du Figaro first leg is over in Caen, France after the amazing start last Sunday in Brittany. The fleet of 47 identical Beneteau Figaro II yachts is getting ready for the next leg that will take them to Dun Laoghaire in Ireland on Sunday. later this month, leg 3, will take them back to the Atlantic Coast of France before the final leg wraps up in Dieppe. The Figaro series is considered a stepping to Open 60 racing in Europe and attracts many racers and enthusiasts.
The Clipper 2011-12 Round the World Yacht Race, the eighth edition of this biennial event, started last Sunday from Southampton on the south coast of England. The teams are finally engaging in proper offshore racing after clearing Ushant and heading out into open water for the first time in the race. In the Bay of Biscay, Visit Finland and New York are still in the lead but Gold Coast Australia and Derry-Londonderry are in the chase.The Race Viewer is at the official website at www.clipperroundtheworld.com while we bring you the latest details.
We have more images and the latest news from the teams getting ready for the America's Cup World Series in Cascais, Portugal, this week-end. I can't remember the last time I saw most competitors wearing helmets while racing; this definitely promises to be different! More at www.americascup.com
The IRC Canadian Championships were held at the Port Credit Yacht Club this past week-end during the annual Lake Yacht Racing Association regatta where 28 competitors raced in four divisions; RCYC's John McLeod and his J-133 Hot Water won IRC 0 with six bullets in nine races, PCYC's Chris Rypkema at the helm of his Beneteau 40.7 Umi Taka won IRC 1, ABYC's Stephen Trevitt was first in IRC 2 on board his J/35 Crime Scene while the Hunter Legend 37, Five-Fifteen, of Jim McGuiness from HYC rounded the winners in IRC 3. A great event leading up the the IRC North American Championships on Lake Ontario later this month.
