The (Pre-Olympic) Games Have Begun—Sailing News from U.S. and afar

The Weymouth and Portland International Regatta has officially kicked off in Weymouth, England, where Olympic class racing will take place through August 13. This event is important for many reasons, the most obvious being that it's taking place in the same racing area where the 2012 Olympic Games will be sailed. Plus, this regatta is also serving as the official test of the area and facilities prior to the first guns of the Olympics. Women's Match Racing had the honor of being the first event of the regatta to sail. Seven flights consisting of 21 highly competitive races were sailed in light winds and flat seas. 'It was quite hard to sail out there,' reported Silke Hahlbrock of her race against American Sally Barkow. 'The wind was dropping. The competition standard was very high and if you make a little mistake you lose.' Hahlbrock ended her day up against Barkow, while Spain's Tamara Echegoyen managed to end her day with a perfect record. More inside.

For Cup fans, these are interesting times. The first act of the America's Cup World Series (ACWS) begins in Cascais, Portugal, on August 6, so look for plenty of exciting media in this issue. Offshore sailors take note—the eighth edition of the Clipper 2011-12 Round the World Yacht Race began on July 31 in Southampton, England. OD sailors—the Laser 4.7 Worlds are being hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club, with racing taking place on San Francisco Bay. And catamaran fans—check out the report from TeamVodafoneSailing's line-honors run in the two-boat multihull challenge to Southport.
