Sneak Peek at Weymouth 2012

If OD sailing is your game, the next two weeks promise to be interesting. The Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, which is being held from July 31 to August 13, will provide great Olympic-class racing action, but it will also serve as the official test of the sailing facilities that will be used during the 2012 Olympic Games (the sailing events will be held in Weymouth, England in the same facility as the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta). The concept is simple: this summer's regatta will serve as a dry-run for the 2012 Games, giving organizers the ability to test and evaluate all operations aspects of the next Olympics, with special attention paid to all technical aspects of holding an Olympic Sailing competition.

'The Olympic Test Event offers a great opportunity for sailors, coaches and support staff from nations around the world to experience the sailing conditions and gain an understanding of the venue,' said Alastair Fox, ISAF's Events Manager. 'Volunteers from the UK and around the world will all have a chance to train and learn together during the Olympic Test Event and ensure that everything is in place for the sailing events of the London 2012 Olympic Games.' Also OD related, the Lightning Worlds are currently unfolding in Buzios, Brazil, and the American team of David Starck, Jody Starck and Ian Jones are making their countrymen proud by sailing a very fast regatta. Cup fans, the long wait is almost over. Racing in the America's Cup World Series Stop 1 (Cascais, Portugal from August 6 to August 14) begins soon. Spectators will get their first glimpse of the hard wingsail-powered AC45 fleet racing in anger. For the teams involved, this event underscores the serious preparation and effort required to race these floating rocketships. Be sure to check out the interview with Loick Peyron, of the French ENERGY TEAM syndicate, in this issue, to get his thoughts on the new class, the realities of sailing these powerful boats and on his still-forming crew.

Also Cup related, check out Grant Dalton's—boss of Emirates Team New Zealand—thoughts on the upcoming event, where eight AC45s will be lining up. 'Everyone will be learning at Cascais,' said Dalton. 'It will set the course for two more regattas this year and possibly eight next year.'
