Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 21st July 2011
The 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race starts in about 100 days.
The occasion was marked yesterday at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, along with the departure from New Zealand of the Emirates Team NZ sailed entry, Camper, plus the announcement of the Stopover in Auckland in March 2012.
Certainly the Stopover will be a far bigger, and grander deal than that organised for the last stopover ion Auckland in the 2001/2 race - and both sides of the Viaduct Harbour will be embraced in the event which runs from 8 - 18 March 2012.

In this edition we run the 3D video showing the Stopover layout, along with some of the detail of the events that are planned. There will be four pinnacle events during the 10 day period - being the Finish of the leg, which is always a major for Auckland as the boats sail down the Northland Coast, a Pro-Am Race, the In-Port Race and then the Race restart - another marque Auckland event. It will be a great time to be in Auckland.
Camper was hoisted aboard a Maersk line ship earlier in the week, bound for Malaysia where she will be transshipped for Felixstowe in UK.

Under the current Protocol for the America's Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand are not allowed to run the photos of Camper, that appear on this page, on their website - the www.emiratesteamnz.com that has been followed by fans for many years.
It might not be the highest traffic website in the sport, but it is a place where the team can publish its own news, establish an identity, give its sponsors benefit through association and run a good media operation. From our standpoint, it was one of the easiest sites to source and download material.

From 1 July. Emirates Team NZ and all other America's Cup teams were required to switch their URL to americascup.com in an attempt to try an aggregate internet traffic. While there may have been some very limited justification for that in an America's Cup context - why would a team be required to run all their Volvo Race news, Extreme 40 news, and other non-AC events and non-AC sponsorship on an America's Cup website?
The logic defies us. But we've only been following web rating and traffic for about 10 years.
Anyone with even a marginal knowledge of internet traffic would know that the America's Cup site attracts a massive traffic during the period of the Cup. The team sites have a smaller more steady traffic and pulling them across to the americascup.com site will have minimal impact on the event site's traffic.

All it will do is annoy fans and established professional teams like Emirates Team NZ.
The switch date and requirement was known from the outset of the 34th America's Cup Protocol (and was changed once). So were a lot of other provisions that were unacceptable to the teams - like high entry fees, sky-high performance bonds - even the requirement to continue into the America's Cup itself. All these were changed when valid opposition was raised.

But not on this issue. Instead the Event organisers have lodged a protest against the twice America's Cup winners.
Why? We don't really know. It's a dumb move and reflects badly on the America's Cup. We look at it in more depth in this issue, rather than just publish the media release as others have done.
Last night we received a great story from the top placed crew in the NZL Yachting Trust Youth team who competed in the ISAF Youth Worlds in Croatia. Theirs was a very good effort - particularly as they sailed as a mixed crew in an open event - and probably put their hands up for the Mixed Multihull selection in the 2016 Olympics.

From North America we have been carrying news of the tragedy that occurred when two sailors drowned during the Chicago Yacht Club's 103rd Race to Mackinac. So far there don't seem to be too many answers as to why the tragedy occurred - which will no doubt come out over the following days and weeks. The sad event follows the death of a UK sailor competing in a recent RORC race, and underlines the fact that sailing can be a very dangerous sport, when things start going wrong.
