It's a late call, considering the race starts in just four months, but stopover port Sanya has brought in Mike Sanderson to head up a team on board the ex-Telefonica Blue for the next Volvo Ocean Race. That makes six confirmed entries for the event, and gives it an even better excuse to wander north from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi and Sanya before returning to the real race track in Auckland. Racing round the world these days is very much akin to G K Chesterton's 'The Rolling English Road', which tells of "the night we went to Glastonbury by way of Goodwin Sands". Sorry, but we can't help but think there is a case of 'the tail wagging the dog' going on here.
Sail-World continues to consolidate its world-wide presence with full media coverage of the forthcoming Chicago-Mackinac Race which starts on 16 July. In terms of numbers, this event is the biggest single distance race in North America, and it is amazing to think that a fleet of (this year) 355 boats will race 289nm on fresh water! Racers who compete in 25 Mackinac races are invited to join the exclusive 'Island Goats Sailing Society', originally named for their appearance, aroma, and behaviour upon reaching Mackinac Island - sorry, we can't bring you the 'aroma' on Sail-World, but maybe that's not such a bad thing!
