Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Offshore racing at its best coming to the Great Lakes!
Italy's Green Comm Racing and Spain's Real Club Nautica of Valencia have partnered to become the eight official challenger in the 2013 America's Cup. This will be the first time in history where a team from one country will be represented through the yacht club of another country.
All the boats are in at the Goat Island Yacht Club in Newport. The Bermuda 1-2 double-handed return leg from Bermuda took a lot longer than the single-handed first leg as the fleet raced in challenging light winds and high current conditions. Congratulations to Toronto's One Girl's Ocean Challenge (Diane Reid and Nick Stellar) and Quebec's Pogo Loco (Philippe Laville and Johanne Longpré) for their first and second place on Leg 2, which led to first and second overall in the Mini 6.5 division.
Only three weeks to go before the start for two Great Lakes major event! Saturday morning, July 16th will see Lake Ontario 300 Challenge racers leave Port Credit, just outside Toronto, for a full circumnavigation of Lake Ontario while many will be heading North from Chicago on the annual Chicago-Mackinac race. Sail-World will be covering both events first hands this year; you can expect pre-race interviews, Images from the water, daily updates and full event wrap-ups. Many of you will remember the horrendous weather conditions of the 2010 Lake Ontario 300 event where one thirds of the fleet abandoned the race on the first day following the damage caused by summer squalls (I still carry the photo of Nick's Café wind instrument showing 59.8 knots). Many are returning in 2011 to deal with unfinished business, while others are taking a sabbatical while they slowly restore their sail inventory. Both events have high safety requirements standards for participating yachts, some of these might seem a little excessive at times, but after having witnessed the challenging conditions that the Great Lakes can dish out, safety of the fleet is paramount. You will be able to follow racers for each event; all the details at www.lo300.org and www.cycracetomackinac.com.
Igor Simcic's Esimit Europa 2 from Slovekia was first to cross the finish line in Genoa to claim line honours at the Giraglia Rolex Cup; this is a repeat from last year for the Isimit Europa 2 crew. In Marseille, the situation improved situation after the shift conditions that prevailed on the first day; in the end, Container was at the top of the score sheet and took the Audi MedCup Marseille Trophy, becoming the first German team to ever win on the circuit.
Locally, racers are getting ready for the upcoming the J/24 Canadian Championships at the Port Credit Yacht Club on July 8th.
Fair winds!
