Sail-World New Zealand: 16 June 2011
 | | Old vs New - the replica of the schooner America meets the wingsailed AC45 against the backdrop of the Golden gate Bridge Gilles Martin-Raget/www.americascup.com | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 16 June 2011
In San Francisco, a greatly reduced entry was announced by America's Cup organisers for the 34th Match to be held in San Francisco.
Depending on which maths you use there are either seven challengers and one defender, - that makes eight teams. Or, seven challengers, one defender and one team yet to be announced - that makes nine. Or there are ten AC45's sold (when every team had to buy one, and Oracle has two of the prototypes).
Whatever, there will be four teams from Europe, two from Asia, one from Oceania, and one from North America.
Sadly, the organisers did not provide a connection for international media, as had been done twice in Auckland earlier this year. Sail-World listened to the media conference via mobile phone in the audience, and wrote our analysis based on that, plus other information to hand.
Long story short, is that the entries have greatly reduced from the fifteen announced in Auckland, at the end of March. And that is despite the easing of the financial hurdles posted in the initial Protocol.

The new information is the fixing of a date for the San Diego round of the America's Cup World Series, and a new logo for the Louis Vuitton Cup.
In this edition of Sail-World we carry the official media release, and images, plus our analysis of the announcement and what was left out.

On the sailing side of the America's Cup. It is a much better picture - with Russell Coutts amply demonstrating that these boats can be 'red-lined ' - in car racing parlance. In this edition, we have more video of the four times America's Cup winner's spectacular cartwheel from Monday.
For Cup fans the reality is now, that they will have to accept that an America's Cup race can be lost by a capsize - a first in America's Cup history (aside from the two previous multihull, Deed of Gift matches).
