The NZL Sailing team has performed outstandingly in the sixth round of ISAF World Cup in the 2012 Olympic venue in Weymouth.
New Zealand's national team won a Gold medal, two Silver medals, placed as third top country, and had nine sailors/crews place in the top ten overall finishers. Outside the NZL Sailing team members, there were some encouraging individual sailor results - boding well for the future and classes where NZ is currently not so strong.
Skandia Sail for Gold, Weymouth 2011 was regarded as an Olympic test regatta by most. Some used it for one of their Olympic selection trials. Others used it to help select competitors for Pre-Olympics.
In any event, this was the premier World Cup regatta for 2011. It was probably the fourth most important regatta in the 2008-2012 Olympic cycle (the others being the 2011 ISAF Worlds, the 2011 Olympic Test regatta and the Olympics themselves).

By any measure the New Zealand effort was a good one, and there is still areas for improvement in many events.
In this edition of Sail-World, we feature several reports from each day of the racing, together reports from the Paralympic crew, Tim Dempsey and Jan Apel racing in the Two-Handed event.
In San Francisco, the AC45's have been out for a first spin on the Bay - well the two boats from Oracle Racing are sailing against each other. The other teams will come together in August in Cascais, Portugal.

San Francisco turned on some of its renowned sailing conditions, yesterday, and Russell 'Crash' Coutts made a serious attempt to justify his nick-name which extends back to his days as a P-class sailor. We have some great shots of Crash Coutts latest attempt to prove there is still some life in the old reputation.
Next week, several America's Cup related media conferences will be held in San Francisco. One of these is expected to announce the teams that remain in the 2013 game, and put an end to the secrecy that has swirled around the event. Whoever heard of a yacht race which had confidential competitors? For all its bluff and bluster, the America's Cup is just a yacht race. America's Cup sailors pull their sailing pants on one leg at a time like everyone else.

While attempts to lift the profile and prestige of the event are laudable, there is no need in the course of that process to alienate the sailing fan base, and sailing media, in the way that has been done with the cloak of confidentiality, surrounding entries, and other matters. In the end, such actions just generate speculation and disbelief at the substance and credibility of the event.
Maybe these concerns will be erased to some degree next week. Maybe not.

In this edition we conclude our coverage of the Auckland-Musket Cove, Fiji Race. It was a remarkable sailing event in many ways, not the least for the tight outcome, and how a 1,140nm race can go down to the wire in such a dramatic way. The match between a Volvo70 and an Orma60 would have been regarded as a mis-match by many. Indeed some predictions based on the original start date had the trimaran taking just under two days for the trip. However a delayed start and light weather changed the complexion of the race completely.
We have the story of the final day in this edition, along with a report from on-board Camper, sailed by Emirates Team New Zealand, and pictures from her.

The Korea Match Cup is well underway. As is usual on the World Match Racing Tour, today's rooster is tomorrow's feather duster. Some of the big names have already been rolled from the event. Two New Zealand crews are competing along with other Kiwis scattered through the ten boat fleet. We have daily reports form the event, and will be continuing coverage on our website.
