Go ahead, make your day
As Melbourne heralds the start of the annual capital city boat show circuit, ask yourself 'why not buy a boat?'
My Year 4 son (and his parents by default) have just done a school project on the life cycle of sea turtles, which reminded me somehow of the boating industry.
Momma dumps around 100 eggs in the sand then swims off to have brunch with the girls. Upon hatching the youngsters instinctively dash to the water, most falling easy prey to birds.
Since the lucky few can live for many years it's vital to get those first steps right.
Now, with Melbourne Boat Show on this long weekend, Adelaide show on June 23-26 and Sydney from July 28 to August 1, boat builders and importers are emerging from the sand. The race is on to reach the water, with only the fittest to survive.

Grey imports are hovering, as you'll read below. Interest rates are another potential worry. At most boat building plants, R&D departments have been burning the midnight oil and the products are generally brilliant. Well priced too.
Problem is, there's a palpable lack of confidence in the air. A negativity not seen since the GFC.
There's a few good reasons why not to buy a boat. I can give you one good reason why you should – fun.
Somewhere we've all lost sight of the fact that life's indeed too short.
