Forty-one boats enjoyed crystal-clear conditions and 15 knots out of the northwest this past Saturday for the start for the 580-mile Telus Van Isle 360.

The race begins and ends just off the picturesque town of Nanaimo, situated on Vancouver Island's southeast shore. From here, the fleet will race in 10 different stage races, ranging from 22 to 138 nautical miles in length, working their way clockwise around the entire island. While some of the passages are a bit headier than others, bad weather can become a constant companion at any point. The race gets its reputation as a serious adventure race primarily due to the sporty offshore legs that negotiate Vancouver's wild western coastline, but the inside legs challenge sailors with impressive currents and tides while simultaneously rewarding with an abundance of sea life and some of the prettiest country anywhere on planet earth...when it's not raining.

Cup fans, check our Richard Gladwell's piece in this issue that looks at the recently announced sweeping changes to the Protocol that will govern the 34th America's Cup. The biggest announcement is that the America's Cup World Series will now be a separate entity from the Cup itself. This will allow for two-tiered participation; a big boost to fledgling teams that are struggling to get into an AC45, let alone start designing their AC72. The bigger cats will still be used for the Cup and the Challenger trials—and possibly the Defender trials, if there is such a contest—but this move also eases the dates in which teams will need to realistically launch (and be sailing) their AC72s by several months. Performance bonds have now been eliminated, again with the intention of fostering participation, especially amongst first-time teams. More inside.

On deck this week is the Skandia Sail for Gold, which runs from June 6 through June 11 and is being held in Weymouth, England, home to the 2012 Olympic sailing venue. Stay tuned for more, as it becomes known.
