Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 04 June 2011
With Auckland being pounded by onshore winds, and a gale warning out, organisers very sensibly postponed the start of the Auckland Suva race today, for a 24 hour period.
Ahead of their decision Emirates Team NZ decided to pull their Volvo 70 Camper, with headwinds expected for the whole of the race duration and most likely for the return home. having done mainly upwind work on their 2000nm qualifying voyage, plus the rest of the trip around NZ, they have elected to go with the breeze rather than into it.

The Suva race will see a new piece of web technology come into play with the race track and time-lapse images coming off Simon Hull's ORMA60, TeamVodafoneSailing. Click here to check out the screen and follow her progress in the race. The latest prognosis from PredictWind has TVS doing a big right hander soon after the race start to get the best angle on the breeze - but it is a big call to step that far away from the rhumb line. This has been a big week of change in the America's Cup. In this edition we analyse the new Protocol that has been published today and the effect it will have on the event.

Long story short is that we expect the latest moves to improve the competition tremendously. The America's Cup World Series effectively becomes a 'Junior League' which will act as both a starting position for aspiring America's Cup teams, and at the same time preserving many of the traditions of the America's Cup, which have been withering since 2003.
By the end of next week, we expect to know the teams that are in for the revamped competition. The heat now comes on the America's Cup Events Authority to get the regattas sold in terms of venues and television rights - if in fact those are to be sold. Certainly the America's Cup as an event needs to stamp a new media and event footprint, and just get established.
