Welcome to Sail-World Canada

Brad Van Liew wins the Velux 5 Oceans Race!

American sailor Brad Van Liew, on board Le Pingouin, has won the final sprint of the Velux 5 Oceans earlier today to secure overall victory. His fellow skippers in the event are still at sea and are expected in La Rochelle, France later today or tomorrow. Canadian Derek Hatfield, tied on point for second place overall with Polish skipper Zbigniew ‘Gutek' Gutkowski is fighting to the end; Gutek and British skipper Chris Stanmore-Major have been dealing with a damaged keel for the past few days. We'll have a complete wrap-up of the event next week.

Quantum Racing won the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit opener in Cascais, Portugal. Check out the Guido Trombetta and Chris Schmid images!

The offshore racing season begins next week-end on Lake Ontario with the traditional first overnight race of the season, the Susan Hood Trophy Race on Friday night, followed by the first event in the Lake Ontario Short Handed Racing Series on Sunday. If this weather keeps up, the Susan Hood Trophy Race will remain true to its moniker as the 'Coolest yacht Race on the Lake'. Both events will to contend without popular local racer Diane Reid, who will be on the Bermuda 1-2 start line in Newport, RI at that time.

Our Canadian Sailing team is attending the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, Holland this week. Richard Clarke and Tyler Bjorn were sitting third in the Star fleet, but unfortunately Richard's wife has had emergency surgery and he is now en route home to care for the family. High winds have caused many races to be canceled yesterday. (I'm uploading a CYA story as I write this...) Last week-end, Canada's Peter Wickwire and his crew of Matt Christie and Tim Bishop comprehensively won the North America/Caribbean Regional Nations Cup final. The Canadian trio, who have an ISAF World Match Race Ranking position of number 75, defeated many competitors to reach the top of the podium. Congratulations! More Canadians on the international sailing scene as Nova Scotia sailors Matt Stokes and Mike Evans are heading to Korea next week to represent Canada at the Korea Cup International Yacht Race in Pohang.

The big event is finally here! The boat dealers and brokers of Port Credit are hosting the First Annual Port Credit Yachting Super Centre Spring Open House this week-end, in association with Bristol Marine, Canadian Yachting, Mason's Chandlery and Port Credit Harbour Marine. Join Anchor Yacht Sales, Crates, Navy Point Yacht Sales, North Lakes Yachting, North South Nautical Group, Pat Sturgeon Yachts and True North Yachts this Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, and get a great deal on your new boat. Enjoy food and refreshments while dreaming about your next cruise on the water. RSVP to openhouse@canadianyachting.ca and receive a coupon for a free lunch!

Racing season is finally upon us, see you on the start line soon!
