Welcome to Sail-World Canada
The weather is improving in time for Spring Open House and racing!
It will be a long road to La Rochelle for the four Velux 5 Oceans skippers as they have to negotiate their way around a massive high pressure system off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canadian Derek Hatfield's home. After enjoying good good speeds since the start in Charleston five days ago, the yachts are now facing lighter winds and much colder temperature as they head north along the Canadian coast. America Brad Van Liew maintains his lead over British skipper Christopher Stanmore-Major who just set a 24-hour speed record for this edition of the race. Derek in third place is protecting his position ahead of Polish skipper Gutek who is experiencing some challenges; he discovered a few days ago he was dragging a huge fishing net caught on his keel and needs to climb up the mast to affect repairs to his mainsail.
Last week, we announced that Mascalzone Latino the 34th America's Cup Challenger of Record had withdrawn from the event; we have since found out that the Royal Swedish Yacht Club represented by Artemis Challenge has been appointed Challenger of Record. The team, headed by oil billionaire Torbjorn Tornqvist, has appointed American Paul Cayard as their CEO.
Etobicoke Yacht Club's Dave Black on Black Dog is the sole Canadian entry in the Melges 24 World Championship being disputed in Corpus Christi, TX. the events wraps up on Saturday and Italian Lorenzo Bressani on UkaUka racing maintains a good lead over the 32 boat strong fleet after 6 races. Check out the action in the Rick Tomlinson images!
The 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit is getting started this week with the first race in Cascais, Lisbon (Portugal) ahead of future events in, Marseille (France), Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy), Cartagena (Spain) and Barcelona (Spain). The TP 52 Series yacht will be joined by the new Soto 40 in the 40 Series race this year. As is usually the case, the action promises to be exciting and the races will be available live over the internet on Audi TV MedCup.
