America's Cup Regatta Management Trials and the Olympic Classes

It seems as though the Cup has been dominating headlines recently, and this issue is no exception. With the America's Cup Regatta Management Trials—a preflight for the media events that will accompany AC45 racing—taking place in Auckland, New Zealand, sailors and skippers are getting a feel for full-pace match-racing aboard hard wingsail-powered catamarans. To help get a better grasp on what the next Cup will be like once the lads scale up to the full-size 72 footers, don't miss the video interviews and racing clips from this event, in this issue. Also, Sail-World.com New Zealand's editor, Richard Gladwell (a former international umpire himself), sat in at the Management Trials for the last day of testing using the Remote Umpire System, which will govern all match racing in Cup and pre-Cup events. Also from Gladwell is an interesting video interview with Stan Honey, ace navigator and the guy responsible for much of the behind-the-scenes technology supporting the planned televised media from the next Cup. This piece is a great primer for anyone interested in seeing how technology will hopefully provide an entry point to sailing for the uninitiated during AC34.

In offshore circles, Groupama's new Volvo Open 70 has reached the team's base in Lorient, France. 'This is a very fine stage in the history of the project: Groupama 4 has finally made it to the base and we have her in front of us!,' said skipper Franck Cammas. 'The team will be able to work on her day and night now to fine-tune the VO70 with a view to her launch. It's almost done: we have to finish the electrics and fit the keel, mast and deck hardware, even though the latter has already been pre-assembled.' More inside.
