Sail-World New Zealand: 1 May 2011
 | | (Medal Race) Sanra Winther (NZL) Laser Radial - Semaine Olympique Francais 2011 © Guillaume Durand | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 1 May 2011
In this edition of Sail-World, we have featured several stories relating to the America's Cup Regatta and Media Trials which are currently underway in Auckland.
Last week, the Regatta Management systems were trialled, and on Friday afternoon we stopped by North Head which is the technology base for the trials and had a look at the new remote umpiring system (RUS) which is in action.
Although still very much in test and development, the system worked well - and we have a story and video of one race in this edition.

Afterwards we talked to Stan Honey one of the key team members behind the development of RUS and who will be adapting the technology he originally developed for Sportvision in the late 1990's for the America's Cup. Honey explains the issues behind both systems, certainly it looks as if America's Cup TV is in for a big boost.
If you have been wondering what the catamarans would look like on TV in the matchracing format, then have a look at the video from Oracle Racing of a couple of minutes of pre-start. It's match racing like you've never seen before - and is very cool.

During the week, five Optimist sailors who will go on to represent New Zealand, later this year at the Optimist Worlds had the opportunity to sail aboard Oracle Racing's AC45's - we have their story in images by Gilles Martin-Raget, and one of the young sailors, Tim Adair tells us what it was like on the big day out.
On Thursday, there was Competitors Forum in Auckland - and the Media session afterwards covered a lot of ground about what to expect in the World Seroes and America's Cup. We have a report of the media session in this edition along with a full audio - or if you want to watch the videos - we have those, too.
Stay tuned to www.sail-world.com/nz for the coverage from the television trials which start this week.

There's been plenty of other sailing action, besides the America's Cup.
In Hyeres, France, Sara Winther has scored her second successive Gold medal in the ISAF World Cup. She turned in a very gritty performance, and we carry daily reports on her races, plus a profile. Other members of the NZL Sailing Team performed well and some will come away determined to improve for the next event. We are starting to get close to the final run up for the 2012 Olympics, with just two World Cup events left, before the Qualification starts in Perth in December this year.
