Sailing Lake Eyre - will they be prosecuted?
 | | Sailing Lake Eyre - will they be prosecuted? .. . | There's much happening to talk about around our coastlines this week.
In Western Australia, the Fremantle to Bali Rally (there's a race too) is about to depart and in Central Australia several sailors are believed to be risking prosecution by sailing in Lake Eyre.
There's news of that bigger than big Sanctuary Cove Yacht Show and a feisty tale of a feisty passage across the Great Australian Bight by Jack and Jude on Bandanyah.
You'll also find lots of advice from our marine authorities about having a safe Easter holiday.
Read how classic sailing ship Endeavour has just started another circumnavigation of Australia, and talking of circumnavigations, the most heart-warming, but scary, cruising tale of the week is of solo sailor 68-year-old Jeanne Socrates on Nereida in the southern Atlantic.
 | | Jeanne Socrates - going for a record .. . | She's currently trailing a drogue in high seas, mending her engine and waiting for another low pressure to arrive, heading for Cape Town where she expects to arrive in early May, becoming the oldest woman to circumnavigate solo, by accident. By accident? Read why.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, as cruising tales go, Meghan Cleary, luxuriating in the tropics on Velella, tells what it's like to go cruising with her cat, Nessie.
On the practical side, I have heard even long experienced ocean sailors confess their ongoing nervousness with positioning their precious boat in closed waters – there's an excellent piece this week with some great pointers about the use of springs for close manoeuvring. UK-Halsey Sailmakers also give some good advice on making a cruising genoa last longer, and how they've achieved it in their sailmaking.
There's nothing like declaring a 'Day' to promote an idea, and this week there are two to watch out for – 'Ready Set Inflate Day' – when sailors across the world will simultaneously inflate their life jackets (remember last year when Jessica Watson led them all?), and 'World Ocean Day', drawing attention to the vital part the ocean plays in all our lives, not just sailors'. Look them up to see how you can play a part...
Many more stories too – from the story of yacht owners who are taking marinas to court over fee rises to the latest from pirate waters. So browse down the headlines to see what interests you.
(and don't forget if YOU have a good story to tell that's of interest to non-competitive sailing and sailors, we'd love to hear it!)
Sweet sailing.
