 The Velux 5 Oceans Sprint 4 is on!
It's regatta time in the Caribbeans where the annual Rolex Cup Regatta just wrapped up in St. Thomas and the 40th anniversary of the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival just got under way. Over 700 racers were on the water in St. Thomas in yachts ranging from the 90-foot Genuine Risk to Melges 24. Despite and amazing crew on board Vela Veloce, Canadian Richard Oland had to concede overall victory to American Jim Schwartz on the TP52 Vesper/Team Moneypenny. Following a few days of fast reaching up the Brazilian coast , the Velux 5 Oceans fleet has seen all the skippers take turns leading the pack since their start from Uruguay on Sunday. They are just today entering a zone of fickle winds following reported headwinds of 30 knots by Canadian Derek Hatfield as he sailed through the transition zone. Their passage North brings warmer temperatures as they near the equator. The next few days promise to be be interesting as it is still anyone's game with only 100 miles separating American leader Brad Van Liew from Polish skipper Gutek, who apparently is still experiencing keel problems at the back of the fleet.
Thomas Colville and Sodebo is getting back home today after an unsuccessful second attempt try to improve the record of fellow Frenchman Francis Joyon for a solo round world voyage. While the North Atlantic weather cooperated in the early days of the voyage in early February, mother nature had other plans for Colville in the end. In Thomas' own words at the end of trip: 'Today Francis Joyon remains the fastest man to sail solo around the world'.
The end is near for Barcelona Word Race leaders Jean-Pierre Dick and Loick Peyron on Virbac-Paprec 3 as they tack their way along the Moroccan coast to Gibraltar. MAPFRE is not far behind while the reminder of the top five have opted for a more offshore route.
Today is an important date in the America's Cup 34 history as the entry period that ran from November 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 comes to an end. While the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron has submitted a formal Notice of Challenge on behalf of Red Maple Racing a number of months ago, we are still waiting for their official announcement while they are moving forward to put the best team on the water.

It's over - Thomas Coville about to finish, but not with a record
Sail-World Cruising, 
Thomas Coville set off on 29 January offshore of the Créac'h lighthouse on Ushant, a French Island in the English Channel to try, for the second time, to best the solo round world record of Francis Joyon, set in 2005 at 59+ days. In 2008, he had his first failed attempt. Since then he had worked on his boat Sodebo, making her faster, stronger. Finally in January, he thought he had a chance.... [more]
