The 34th America's Cup took another step down its new path yesterday with an on the water media show, featuring four of the five AC45 class yachts. The fifth, Emirates Team NZ, did not participate.
In this edition we have still image and video coverage of the spectacle and can gauge how the racing will look in the even more spectacular, and much bigger, AC72 catamarans.
What we miss off the catamarans is the big spinnakers and gennakers of the monohulls, which were spectacular - particularly when you were on the water and close up. Looking at the video of two, and four, of the AC45s at pace in a 15kt seabreeze (hitting we would guess 25kts plus) it is a different type of sailing, and close as you will ever get to F1 racers on the water.
Don't forget to mentally scale up these images to get to the AC72 - that means you almost double the wingsail height and make the hulls 50% longer and more than double the beam (from 6.4metres to 14 metres). So maybe some of the grandeur of the AC monohulls will be back albeit in a different form.
Next month the media and regatta trials for the AC45 and America's Cup World Series get underway in two sessions on the Hauraki Gulf before the show leaves New Zealand around 20 May.

Newsflash! Clash at the Cove organizer, Paul Shanahan has advised that due to a rather testing weather system which is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain from a northerly quarter this weekend, racing at the event has been put on hold. Paul told Sail-World this morning that a number of skippers were reluctant to make the voyage north from Auckland in what would potentially be gear damaging conditions.
A number of cruising yachts in the planned feeder race may still make it and will be warmly received at Marsden Cove. Weather on Sunday is forecast to moderate and may allow to an impromptu event.
Round 6 of the Rayglass Offshore Series will run to schedule as it is held on an inner harbour course. The Northland Boat Show will also run as planned. Should be a great day at a great venue. Check out the real estate deals while you are there.

The first day's racing in the 2011 Congressional Cup has been completed in Long Beach, California. New Zealand's Phil Robertson and his Waka Racing crew are competing and didn't have the greatest of days, but some rather odd things happen in match racing, and as we saw so many times with Blackmatch Racing, all you have to do is make the next cut, to get another life in the series. We're carrying Rich Roberts' excellent reports and images, plus there is live coverage available.
Better news from Sydney where the New Zealand crew skippered by Danielle Bowater are leading the Harken Womens International Match Racing Series. We are and will be carrying daily reports and images of this event on our website www.sail-world.com.

Visitors to Sail-World.com will notice that there has been a significant change to the appearance of the site, with a slide show on the top of the site of some of the best images from the stories featured. Currently there are five images in this stack, but we will increase it to ten at a later stage. There have also been some changes to the site with the centering of the page and surround with a black border - which will vary in width depending on your screen shape. All the time we are trying to keep the site as simple as possible, and compatible with as great a range of devices as possible - not easy in the current world!

From Christchurch we have grabbed a couple of older stories about the impact of the two earthquakes on rowers in the city. Rowing clubs generally suffered a lot more than the sailing clubs in terms of physical damage to property and water. We've always admired the basic spirit of rowers, and the earthquake has bought out the best in them. It's claimed that 95% of the school rowers were back in full training within four days of the tragic 22 February earthquake. Canterbury Rowing is blessed with a great leader in John Wylie, and despite having his house totalled on 22 February, his main priority was to get the school rowers back on the water for the Maadi Cup next week in Karapiro. These are a couple of great and quite inspiring stories and we're only sorry we didn't get onto them earlier.

Once again our thoughts go out to the people of Christchurch and Japan. Again any fundraising you or your club can do will be appreciated. We expect to have more on a sailing specific fund in a few weeks.
