Going Berserk- Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

If you've not hear of the Berserk, the adventure yacht from Norway, that disappeared in Antarctica - now is the time to check out a very puzzling story. Nancy Knudsen from Sail-World Cruising brings us an indepth interview with the skipper Jarle Andhoy, who was on the ice on a quad bike when a storm with 80 knot winds hit his vessel.

If you're a fan of the Volvo Ocean Race, these are exciting times. While the first gun doesn't fire until fall, all the teams are making big announcements. Newport-based Puma Ocean Racing Team Powered by Berg Propulsion, skippered by hometown great Kenny Read, just announced their team roster

Michi Mueller and Casey Smith join Read as the Puma alumni from the team's last lap; they are joined by VOR legends Brad Jackson, Jonathan Swain, and Tony Mutter, as well as other big names. The team is currently training aboard George David's Juan K-designed Rambler 100 (ex Speedboat) while their next-generation Volvo Open 70 (also a Juan-K design) is being completed at New England Boatworks.

'The decisions we make now are the ones that will create success or failure in this race, and having this team of veterans involved early certainly increases our chances to make proper decisions,' said Read. 'Not only do we have a team that can sail a boat fast, but we have a team that understands what it takes to compete in a race like the Volvo. Great attitudes, great skills, which hopefully leads to good things down the road.'

While the VOR rule calls for three 'under 30s' (sailors less than 30 by a certain date), Read outdid himself by hiring Rome Kirby, 21, as a trimmer and driver. Kirby, it should be remembered, was on Puma's reserve bench during the 2008/2009 edition; Rome's dad, Jerry Kirby, was serving as Read's bowman. The torch has been passed, both with the younger Kirby filling his dad's berth and with the entire new generation of VOR sailors who are getting a chance to participate in this awesome race. Offshore with the Barcelona World Race (BWR) leaders, the options are not looking straightforward as the forerunners press through the Saint-Helena anticyclone. Further astern, Kito de Pavant and Seb Audigane ( Groupe Bel) have had to stop in Ushuaia, Argentina, to examine and fix their keel. The situation doesn't look pretty. 'The keel was swinging longitudinally at a height of over a meter,' reported de Pavant. 'The noise was so loud that we got the impression that we were slamming into each wave. We also have a small leak, since the ram has made a small hole in the hull. We were conscious of the danger. The watchword was safety and we had to anticipate the eventuality of capsizing. Everything was ready. The compartments were hermetically sealed and we stayed in our survival suits continuously.' More inside.
