The Rich Get Richer- Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

As is often the case with offshore sailing, the race leaders in the double-handed, non-stop-around-the-world Barcelona World Race (BWR) are experiencing a far better ride in the South Atlantic than some of the stragglers further astern. Take for example Loïck Peyron and Jean-Pierre Dick aboard Virbac-Paprec 3, the consistent pacesetting boat in this event. 'We have a good Atlantic rhythm: sleep, work, [eat] freeze-dried [food], sleep,' said Dick. 'Just now we are both on deck working when we can. And after two months together, then things just happen naturally. We saw some funny dolphins yesterday, black and white. Loïck saw a seal with beautiful moustache.' Currently and consistently, Peyron and Dick's biggest threat is the Spanish Olympians and Volvo Ocean Race veterans Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez aboard Mapfre, now almost three hundred miles astern.

Back in Wellington, New Zealand, Juan Merediz and Fran Palacio (Central Lechera Asturiana) are working with Southern Spars to see if they can rejoin the broken halves of their mast and continue their race. 'We are very motivated,' said Merediz. 'But on a technical level there are many complications. The major problem is that, and there are many things broken, we are lacking a Genoa. And if we want to stay in the race we must satisfy the Imoca measurement rules. It was already complicated in Barcelona to change the rig and so the logical thing is to be able to join the two pieces.' More on the fates and fortunes of the BWR fleet, in this issue.
