Sail-World New Zealand: 11 February 2011

Preparing to cast off the rig with bouyancy attached - Team Vodafone Sailing  Colin Preston
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 11 February 2011

Good and bad news from the Wednesday night race on Aucklan's Waitemata Harbour, when the ORMA60, Team Vodafone Sailing dropped her rig in the Waitemata Harbour - that's the bad news. The good news is that (a) the wingsail floated and (b) onboard reports say the damage was minimal to boat and rig.

Contrast that with damage a monohull incurs after breaking a shroud!

In this edition we have several images of the incident which occurred when TVS was sailing at around 25kts and being hotly pursued by the AC45 with a Team New Zealand crew on board.

Also in this edition, news of two Asia teams in Auckland looking at possible America's Cup entries - which now stand at six Challengers and one Defender. The Yacht Club de Paris revealed their hard-core multihull team on Wednesday night and we carry report of that team in this edition. They will be a two AC45 and two AC72 team.

From the New Zealand sailing scene we have reports from Team Jolly (Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie) the Womens 470 Silver medallists at the 2010 World Championships, New Zealand's best performed Olympic crew last year. They update on the sailing they have done and what lies ahead in a big European summer for New Zealand crews.

In Sydney, New Zealand crews have been racing for the Hardy Cup. We carry reports on each day's racing from the event, plus a report from the winning New Zealand crew.

Good sailing!
