Velux 5 Oceans, Barcelona World Race, AC and more sailing news

Welcome to Sail-World.com's European newsletter.

This week we have America's Cup news as Oracle pulls out of Valencia and testing continues with the AC45.


On February 6th the next sprint of the Velux 5 Oceans starts from Wellington, New Zealand to Punta del Este in Uruguay.

Virbac-Paprec 3 skippers Jean-Pierre Dick and Loïck Peyron continue to lead the Barcelona World Race. Groupe Bel and Spain's Estrella Damm battled it out for the minor positions this week.

The Jules Verne Trophy challenge is on! Thomas Coville onboard Sodebo has set off chasing the 'solo' record held by
Francis Joyon (Idec), while the maxi trimiran Banque Populaire V, skippered by Pascal Bidegorry and with 13 crew, is chasing Franck Cammas and Groupama's 'fully crewed' record.

The Miami OCR, the second leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup has just finished and there is more international sailing news from around the globe.

Virbac-Paprec Sailing Team made a narrow band before the storm

Virbac-Paprec Sailing Team passed the Barcelona World Race Crozet ice gate before the storm forecast! The duo is relatively relieved, since they did not get to close grips with it, i.e. head wind and waves; which would have been a very difficult and demanding situation for Virbac-Paprec 3. However, they will be sailing in strong weather downwind for 12 hours.... [more]

We may have seen a glimpse into the future of sailing today on board the AC 45. Chris Steele, 18, of Auckland is a Laser and Moth sailor (and a former Optimist World Champion) with his eye on the America's Cup. And today he got his first taste of it.
