On Friday evening, the remains of Cyclone Wilma played havoc with the top half of the North Island of New Zealand, with significant flooding, slips and strong winds - which continued for Saturday.
The conditions forced the cancellation of the Mahurangi Regatta - the classic yacht spectacular of the Auckland sailing season, and unfortunately the event will not be deferred, albeit it in a reduced form, for later this weekend.
However the Oceanbridge Auckland Anniversary Regatta should be unaffected on Monday - and Aucklanders will get the rare sight of a wing sailed AC45 lining up against some of the classic sailing yachts - of which the City of Sails has an abundance.

On the subject of classic yachts, on Friday afternoon, we were talking with Ivor Wilkins author of the magnificent book 'Classic' he reports that the print run of 3,000 has almost sold out, so if you do not yet have a copy - get in fast click here to get a direct copy.
Friday afternoon was also the occasion for a rather impromptu media conference in the old Team New Zealand shed in Halsey St, now the base or America's Cup Regatta Management, as they effect the handover of the AC45 to the entered teams in the 34th America's Cup.

The handover of the AC45 from the Oracle Racing test team to ACRM should take place next week, after which the first four America's Cup teams to enter will be given a period of about a week for their own testing, before receiving their own AC45's at a cost of about $1million NZD each.
We have several stories from that media conference in this edition, with maybe one more to come.

On the New Zealand sailing scene, we have reports from three regattas being sailed in Napier, plus Genevieve Howard takes a look at the Velux 5 Oceans fleet currently in stop-over mode in the Capital. There is plenty more sailing action in Wellington coming up over the coming month.
From the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta we have a report from the NZL Sailing Team, who as we reported earlier made the quarter-finals (top eight) of the World Cup event - which is certainly one of the better results from this event for New Zealand over the past two years. And even better given that this was the first time this new combination has stepped up to the plate at this level.

Final Day Blown Out at the Kiwi Cup and Access Nationals

Thirty minutes before the scheduled start time for the final day of racing today, Race Officer Gerry Martin called a halt to the regatta as a southerly of 25+ knots piped in across Hawkes Bay on New Zealand's North Island. A number of competitors were towed back to the Napier Sailing Club by safety crews, assisted by the Noelex 25 fleet who had also abandoned racing.... [more]
