Floods affect Reef, Stars the ticket for boat shows, Oman ambitionsThere is plenty of news this week from around the world, but the plight of Queensland has stolen the headlines.
Described by the Premier of Queensland and the Prime Minister as Australia's worst peacetime disaster, with the potential to rival Cyclone Tracy (which flattened Darwin and killed 71 people) and eclipsing the legendary floods of 1974, the Queensland floods have risen to a new peak.
Many suburbs in Brisbane are preparing to evacuate today and Toowoomba residents are still reeling from the 'tsunami' of water that flowed through yesterday, ripping houses off their peers, jumbling cars like toys in muddy, fast-flowing currents and sweeping people away.
More than 70 people have been reported missing and 8 people are confirmed dead.
Initial estimates of the damage in Queensland are being tallied in the billion of dollars. On the ground, the Premier, Anna Bligh has requested people donate at their local banks rather than calling the Premier's hotline which is being used as a source of information for emergency workers and flood victims. You can also donate online at www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html
In other news, London is celebrating an enormous boat show this year, hoping to match the 102,000 visitors that attended last year's event. The approach this year was interactivity - get your hands on sailing, boating and all its bits - as well as celebrity. Too many 'names' to mention, but all of them famous in their fields. Read all about why aligning a brand or event with high profile people is a great way to cut-through in our exclusive interview with publicity-pro, Max Markson.
Marinas in Dubai and Cyprus, new products from Musto, the wrap up of PIMEX and details of the upcoming, bigger than ever Brisbane Tinnie and Tackle show are all here this week.
