Sail-World New Zealand: 15 December 2010

Clash at the Cove - March 2011  Marsden Cove
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 15 December 2010

We have been following the unfolding events in San Francisco with a degree of incredulity.

In this edition we feature a number of reports from the last two days. And time will tell whether the City and County of San Francisco have done enough to secure the Hosting Rights for the 34th America's Cup, or if it will go elsewhere in the US or Europe.

Of the options being put on the table for consideration as the Venue, we are led to believe that the Italian one is the most lucrative and straight forward - which must give them two big ticks when it comes to evaluation. Newport RI, is looking good as well, we hear.

Time will tell - and time, we believe, at this stage is on San Francisco's side, but that is all. The test for the others will be whether they can come through ahead of the 31st December 2010, unless that date is shifted.

America's Cup news aside there are some great New Zealand stories in this edition of Sail-World, including several sailor reports.

First of these is from the New Zealand Optimist team who competed in Noumea, claiming the overall title for the first time.

Patrick Haybittle gets to top Mark ahead of Hazel and Ava Mannering - Noumea.  Brian Haybittle

We have the first in a two part series from Michelle Slade who profiles New Zealand's Brad Webb, a crew member on USA-17, the 120ft trimaran which successfully challenged for the 33rd America's Cup earlier this year. He was one of three New Zealanders aboard the radical yacht.

Sail Melbourne is underway with several New Zealand crews competing. Best of these is the 49er combination of Burling and Tuke, who are within an ace of leading their competition. Top Laser Radial sailor, Sara Winther is also in the top three overall after the first day. We will have updates on www.sail-world.com wach day of the regatta.

The Extreme 40 program has been announced with Emirates Team New Zealand signing on for the nine event tour. They will be on of four past and present America's Cup teams on the circuit.

In this edition we also have entry details for the Oceanbridge Anniversary Regatta and also the Marsden Cove Clash at the Cove to be staged at the end of March, with a feeder race to Gulf Harbour on 25 March 2011.

Thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves. Many thanks to those who have contributed to this edition.

Good sailing!
