Traditions
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I found the family car pointed towards Port Townsend. As is usually the case with these trips, my goal was window shopping for a perfect little wooden sloop, outfitted with a wood-burning stove and wooden spars.

While there were plenty of fine specimen to be seen in town, my personal favorite (actually, a personal all-time favorite sailboat) was the Herrescoff Rozinanti that the folks at the Northwest Maritime Center and the Wooden Boat Foundation had under the shed. This fine-looking double ender could melt hearts anywhere that people love boats. While my visit was brief, it was still a wonderful reminder of sailing's rich history and deep-seated traditions.
And speaking of wooden boats, be sure to check out the photo gallery and the video of the Dhow racing that took place at the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai.
Meanwhile, all international sailing attention this weekend was centered on the main event at the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai, which concluded this past Saturday. Ultimately, Emirates Team New Zealand bested their American-flagged opponent in a clean sweep of two races. 'We kinda saved our best 'til last,' observed Emirates Team New Zealand managing director Grant Dalton. 'Oracle have been the form boat for the whole regatta. We came out today with determination knowing that on our day we are good enough but we would really need to produce.'

'It's pretty disappointing,' commented BMW/Oracle skipper James Spithill. 'We had our opportunities in both races, but they beat us fair and square. The results stand and we've got to congratulate them. They're a strong team and sailed a good regatta.'
Also in Cup circles, the America's Cup Event Authority this weekend introduced its first partner, Louis Vuitton. 'We are extremely privileged that our vision for the next America's Cup has attracted the return of a company like Louis Vuitton,' said Richard Worth, Chairman, America's Cup Event Authority. 'The 34th America's Cup will culminate in 2013, marking the 30th anniversary of Louis Vuitton's support of the sport of sailing, so we could not be more proud to see this great partnership continue and strengthen.'
And lastly, two-time Cup winner Alinghi—Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli's professional sailing team—announced that they will not compete in AC34, citing the Protocol and other initiatives taken by the Defender that they do not approve. Alinghi is now the second high-profile sailing team, along with British sailing squad TeamOrigin, to decline to sail in the next Cup.
May the four winds blow you safely home,
